The eye is one of the most important organs of the body. Its function is to detect light entering the eye, so that humans can see objects around them. Just like other organs of the body, the eye also often experiences health problems. Some of them are cataracts, nearsightedness, to astigmatism.
Characteristics of Cylindrical Eyes
In medical terms, cylindrical eyes are called astigmatism. This is a condition in which the eyes experience blurred and shadowy vision due to the shape of the cornea or lens of the eye that is not perfectly convex. To distinguish the characteristics of cylindrical eyes from other eye disorders, here are five characteristics of cylindrical eyes that need to be watched out for:
- Eyes Easily Tired
The first symptom often experienced by people with astigmatism is tired eyes. When doing something, a person needs a high level of precision. In normal eyes, this activity is not so tiring. However, in people with astigmatism, doing something for a long time can make their eyes tired quickly.
- Unable to See Light and Blurred Vision
The presence of direct light that hits the eyes will be very disturbing for people with astigmatism. In addition, people with astigmatism will also experience shadowy or blurry vision. This is caused by the eye’s inability to correct blurred vision.
- Headaches and Difficulty Focusing
Headaches occur because of blurred vision, so you have to work harder when looking at an object. Headaches generally occur in the front of the head (frontal lobe).
- Narrowed Angle of Vision
Another characteristic of astigmatism is the narrowing of the angle of vision. When looking at something far away, the eyes automatically narrow to focus their vision. Not only that, people with astigmatism will also tilt their heads to get a clearer vision.
- The Need to Read Closer
Similar to nearsightedness, astigmatism is also characterized by the need to read something closer. This is because astigmatism tends to have difficulty seeing writing that is far away, so the writing must be brought closer to be legible.
Astigmatism Eye Treatment
Here are some ways that can be done to treat astigmatism:
- Using contact lenses or special cylindrical glasses.
- Undergoing LASIK (laser-assisted in-situ keratomileusis) surgery. This surgery uses a laser to reshape the cornea and improve the focus of light entering the eye, resulting in better vision.
- Perform PRK (photorefractive keratectomy) surgery. This procedure will remove the epithelial cells (the clear layer on the surface of the eye) and repair the corneal tissue.
- Performing LASEK (laser assisted subepithelial keratomileusis) surgery is an eye surgery that combines two surgical techniques, namely LASIK and PRK.
Other ways to overcome astigmatism are by maintaining eye hygiene, avoiding bad habits (such as reading in the dark or watching TV too closely), and increasing consumption of vegetables and fruit that contain vitamins A and C.
